Fire safety is often an afterthought in office design, but for high-rise commercial buildings in Bangalore, it is a legal necessity. Navigating the NBC (National Building Code) requirements for glass can be complex.
Integrity vs. Insulation
There are two types of fire-rated glass: those that prevent the passage of flames and smoke (Integrity) and those that also block the heat from a fire (Insulation). For stairwell enclosures and escape routes, Insulation is often required to ensure occupants can safely evacuate without being exposed to radiant heat.
Required Fire Ratings
In most Bangalore commercial parks, partitions in critical exit corridors must have at least a 60-minute fire rating. This requires specialized fire-rated glass and, crucially, fire-rated steel or specialized aluminum framing systems. Normal aluminum will melt in a fire, causing the glass to fail regardless of its rating.
Toughened Glass is NOT Fire-Rated
A common misconception is that toughened (tempered) glass is fire-rated because it is heat-treated. This is false. Toughened glass will shatter under the thermal stress of a fire within minutes. Fire-rated glass is a multi-layered or ceramic material specifically engineered to survive extreme heat.
Compliance Documentation
At Meaven Designs, we don't just install glass; we provide the compliance paperwork. Getting your Fire NOC (No Objection Certificate) requires proof of testing for your installed systems. We ensure that every component of our fire-rated installations is certified by international testing labs.
